Mayors Migration Council
Cities are the main actors in dealing with migration and flight – be it as places of origin, transit or destination. Despite their central roles in the field of migration, they have so far had no voice in intergovernmental dialogue, especially in multilateral organisations such as the UN. Launched by the Open Society Foundations and the Federal Government (FDFA/SDC), the Mayors Migration Council MMC supports cities with knowledge and contacts in actively involved in shaping migration policy at international, national and regional level. To this end, the MMC bundles the activities of existing networks and uses them strategically to strengthen the role of cities in shaping and implementing international agendas in the field of migration (Global Compact for Migration, Global Compact for Refugees, 2030 Agenda, etc.).
The MMC is headed by ten mayors from all regions of the world, including Zurich's Mayor Corine Mauch. As part of the MMC, Zurich is contributing experience in the field of integration, such as innovative solutions such as FOGO – a combination of housing for refugees and young adults in training with gastronomy, small businesses, cultural and educational offers – or the partnership with the Lebanese first-flight city of Tyre. The Mayor also represents the concerns of the MMC in relevant events of international organisations.
