European Coalition of Cities against Racism
The European Coalition of Cities Against Racism (ECCAR) is part of a UNESCO global initiative launched in 2004. Its aim is to create an international network of cities that work against racism, discrimination and xenophobia. The approximately 150 member cities commit themselves to implementing a 10-point action plan, whereby they decide for themselves which concrete measures they take.
The accession of the City of Zurich in 2007 goes back to a suggestion of the Foreigners' Advisory Board. In doing so, the city council reaffirms its political will to make an active contribution against racism. At the same time, it acknowledges the cultural and economic advantages of a diverse urban population. A working group consisting of representatives from various departments was set up to accompany and coordinate previous activities and the implementation of the 10-point action plan.
