In 2007, the city of Zurich joined the European city network Eurocities, which was founded in 1986. Eurocities is committed to sustainable urban development in which as many people as possible can enjoy a high quality of life. More than 130 cities with more than 120 million inhabitants from 35 European countries are members of Eurocities.

Participation in the forums for economic development, environment, mobility, housing and social affairs provides the City of Zurich with valuable substantive suggestions for urban politics. The External Relations Department of Urban Development Zurich is responsible for the coordination between Eurocities and the various municipal service departments.
