Mayors for Peace
In August 1945, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were reduced to rubble by an atomic bomb. The two cities decided to prevent such a catastrophe in the future under all circumstances. Finally, in 1982, a UN session gave rise to the Mayors for Peace network. Since 1991, it has held the status of a UN NGO with "special consultative status" and today has over 7,902 member cities from 163 countries. The main objectives of the network are global nuclear disarmament and solidarity between different cultures. In recent years, further humanitarian objectives have been added.
Zurich joined Mayors for Peace in 1985 under the then Mayor Thomas Wagner and is thus one of the first members.
