Population survey

Population Survey 2021

Despite the corona pandemic, the quality of life in the city of Zurich remains very high

The overwhelming majority of the population likes to live in Zurich, feels safe and well represented by the authorities. As in previous years, the majority rate of quality of life is high to very high. The results of the eleventh population survey came about under special conditions, as various measures to contain the coronavirus were in force during the survey period (between February and May 2021). Nevertheless, from the point of view of the city of Zurich, the results are largely positive.

This year's focus was on the topics of urban development and transport. The results show that 80 percent of Zurich residents believe that the city of Zurich is developing in a positive direction. Satisfaction with public transport remains high. Residents continue to travel most frequently by public transport – although their use in 2021 was less intensive than in previous years due to the pandemic.

At the same time, when asked about the biggest problems currently facing the city of Zurich, respondents most frequently mentioned traffic (48%). From the point of view of the population of Zurich, the second biggest problem is the scarcity of low-cost housing (37%). The corona pandemic follows in third place by a wide margin (10%).

**********************

The City of Zurich has been conducting the population survey since 1999, and in 2021 for the eleventh time. A random sample of people who have lived in the city for at least one year and are at least 18 years old is surveyed. The questionnaire contains a constant part, which makes it possible to map developments and draw comparisons. This involves various assessments of Zurich as a place of residence and living as well as the assessment of politics and administration. A variable part of the questionnaire is dedicated to a changing thematic focus. In 2021, it will focus on urban development and transport issues.

The population survey was conducted online and on paper for the second time in 2021.
