What does belonging mean for Zurich residents who grew up in Switzerland as the child of immigrants? What negative or positive attributions and clichés are they confronted with in everyday life? Three researchers from the University of Neuchâtel and nccr – on the move – asked young people from the city of Zurich these questions. The researchers shed light on the circumstances of belonging and exclusion and how those affected react to them.
Constantly being asked where you really come from, not being able to vote and voting, always being underestimated at school. People who grew up in Switzerland as children of immigrants report such everyday experiences. These experiences are not only widespread. At the event, the researchers present their results and discuss approaches and possibilities with experts and the audience about approaches and possibilities to combat clichés, discrimination and racism in everyday life. What can individuals do? Where do institutions have responsibility? Are there effective approaches?
Presentation by Carolin Fischer and Joanna Menet (MAPS). Discussion with Giacomo Dallo (OJA), Rahel El-Maawi (Bla*sh), Nina Fargahi (edito), Christof Meier (Integration Promotion Zurich) and Sibylle Mathis (PH Zurich). Moderated by Janine Dahinden (University of Neuchâtel).
