Translation apps in consultations
Translation apps are being used more and more. Which ones are suitable in the context of oral consultations? Here are some helpful questions and answers on this topic. More detailed information can be found in the PDF document below (Working Materials 4)
Review of communication
When counsellors and clients communicate with each other in a language that at least one of the two people does not fully know, this can lead to uncertainty. The translation apps can be used well in these situations to check if what is being said has been understood.
Complementing existing language skills
Translation apps can also be valuable when advising in a language you speak well. If, for example, technical jargon is missing, the apps can also be helpful for translating individual terms.
Incorrect or inappropriate translation
It also happens with the translation apps that the translation is incorrect or that the translated words do not fit the context – even if the translation is basically correct. Such errors and inconsistencies can only be corrected if the consultants have a basic knowledge of the language to be translated. If the language is completely foreign to the counsellors, these adjustments cannot be made.
Uncertainty regarding application
If the client has little knowledge of German, there may be uncertainties in the application. In these situations, it is important to first ask the client if they want to use the translation apps.
Apps
There are apps that focus on either oral or written translation, and those that offer both translation functions. Despite the large offer, the following apps are still at the top:
- Google Translate (oral and written)
- Microsoft Translator (oral and written)
- DeepL (written only)
Available technology
In order to use the oral translation function of the apps, you need a stable Wi-Fi. The written translation function of most apps can be used offline (DeepL only works with an internet connection). To be able to use the apps offline, all you have to do is download the language packs.
Language Skills Clients
Some apps have a limited choice of languages or make certain languages available in a limited way (for example, only in one translation direction). Therefore, it is necessary to check to what extent the client's language is available. Furthermore, the writing and reading skills of the client must be taken into account (keyboard typing, literacy, other script or non-Latin alphabet →oral translation function).
Application «Easy-to-understand language»
In oral conversation, it is necessary to use easy-to-understand language in both the oral and written apps.
Instruction and operation
In order for the conversation to be structured using the translation apps, the clients must be instructed at the beginning. You will be reminded to express yourself in simple and short sentences if possible. It is also important that the app is operated by the counsellors so that the conversation can be guided.
