zone*imaginaire: Temporary uses as potential
An interdisciplinary research team investigated economic, social, cultural and planning aspects of interim uses as part of the CTI research project zone*imaignaire. On the basis of seven case studies in the cities of Zurich, Winterthur and Aarau, it showed the importance and potential of temporary uses in urban development. In Zurich: Toni- und Geroldareal, area Binz/ Giesshübel.
The researchers emphasize that intermediate areas are actual places of innovation and creativity and are important as hotbeds and for start-ups. Interim uses are also image-building and generate considerable returns for the site owners during planning phases, but are rarely consciously understood as a planning step in a site development. Interim uses usually last several years and thus also raise the question of the appropriate legal handling.
In addition to a comprehensive review of the topic, the zone*imaginaire project offers a toolbox for dealing with interim uses, which is aimed equally at intermediate users, landowners, site development and the public sector. It shows instruments and strategies for action in dealing with interim uses.
At the end of November 2009, the book "zone*imaginaire" with the results of the research work was published. The brochure «Interim uses - meaning, procedures, ideas. A guide» summarizes the most important results.
