Housing and socio-economic situation

An evaluation of the Swiss Labour Force Survey (SAKE) for the city of Zurich with selected comparisons beyond the city

If one compares the rough distribution of rent with the rough distribution of household incomes and the resulting theoretically sustainable rents (25% of household income), the following can be stated: On the one hand, there is a lack of housing offers in the very lowest price segment for the lowest household income class. Conversely, there is a great theoretical demand potential, especially for the segment of more expensive apartments with a monthly rent of more than CHF 2500. This potential has increased due to the increase in incomes in the period under consideration from 2002 to 2008. This is likely to remain the case for 2011 on the basis of wage and rent indicators.

Furthermore, the study deals with the question of who lives in which apartment, with reference to the socio-economic situation, in particular to the labour market situation.
