Zurich – Vinnytsya: a special friendship
Since 2010, there has been a lively exchange with the Ukrainian university city of Vinnytsya, which with almost 370,000 inhabitants is similar in size to the city of Zurich. However, this exchange has its origins in a project of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO, as part of which the Zurich Public Transport Company VBZ has made 25 second-hand trams available to the Ukrainian city free of charge. Within the framework of mutual visits, concrete topics were identified in which cooperation makes sense.
Vinnytsya is considered to be particularly innovative in Ukraine and modern, citizen-friendly urban development, a customer-oriented city administration, good offers in the social sector and energy efficiency are among the main concerns of Vinnytsya's city government. Zurich's know-how is particularly in demand with regard to the process level.
The exchange with Vinnytsya is thematically focused and limited in time. For example, a joint workshop on "urban strategies" was held in autumn 2011. In 2013/2014, a concrete cooperation in the field of social affairs (use of public space; Participation of the population). Within the framework of joint workshops, the renovation, design and upgrading of the Park Druzhby Narodov – with the participation of the population – was advanced. In parallel, Seco carried out a large-scale project in the field of energy efficiency in Vinnytsya, which aims to introduce the "Energy City" label and modernize the district heating system. In 2015, Vinnytsya became the first Ukrainian city to be certified as part of the "European Energy Award".
