As part of the European Alpine Space programme, the City of Zurich participated in the "Rurbance" project from 2012 to 2015, which promoted cooperation between cities and their rural peripheries. The project partners included the Italian regions of Piedmont, Lombardy and Veneto as well as the cities of Ljubljana, Graz, Munich and Grenoble. The Zurich project investigated the change in the relations between the cantons along the Gotthard Transversal with the construction of the new base tunnel. It was completed in the summer of 2015.
