The city of Zurich and its surrounding communities have long since grown together functionally. As part of the legislative priority "Creating alliances – politics beyond borders" (2006–2010), Zurich sought increased cooperation with the municipalities of the agglomeration and the definition of common interests. In this context, the city participated in the project CityRegion.Net, which was completed in mid-2011.
