Surname upon Marriage
Before you get married, allow adequate time to think about the surname you want to use. You can keep your current surname or choose a common surname. The common surname can only be one of your birth names.
Place of residence abroad
If you do not live in Switzerland, applying the Swiss law regarding surnames is only possible for Swiss nationals. Persons with other nationalities should contact their country of residence for information on the possible use of names.
Surnames of foreign nationals
If you are not a Swiss national, you have the option of applying the law of your home country for your surname. In that case, it might be necessary for you to provide a confirmation of your embassy or consulate that your desired surname is accepted in your home country. Please enquire with the embassy in charge early enough.
